Folklore - Feast of the Corpus Christi in Orvieto

Orvieto (Tr). The celebrations surrounding the Feast of the Corpus Christi will be held in Orvieto on May 25th. In 1263 Pietro da Praga, a priest who was officiating Mass in the Church of Santa Cristina in Bolsena, saw blood flow from the consecrated host and stain the linen altar cloth. He immediately hurried to Orvieto, to Pope Urban IV, who promptly sent one of his bishops to Bolsena to investigate and bring back the blood-stained cloth. On August 11th 1264 the Pope issued the Transiturus Bull, which instituted the Corpus Christi as a feast day for the whole of Christendom. Every year since that date, on the Sunday following Corpus Christi, the cloth of the Miracle of Bolsena is carried in its reliquary at the head of a procession through the city streets.
Celebrations begin in the morning at 9am in the Duomo, with the display and adoration of the relic. This is followed by High Mass and the Santissimo Corporale procession with over 400 people dressed in magnificent Medieval costume. Since 1993 on the eve of the feast day there is the procession of the Dame e dei Popolani, with 70 ladies in Medieval garb processing through the streets to the accompaniment of Medieval music and dances. This event was inspired by the idea that, on the day prior to the feast, the patrician families from the countryside around the city would have come to town with their vassals in preparation for the following day’s celebrations.

Programme:
Saturday May 24th, 4pm – Ex Caserma Piave – the Corteo delle Dame emerges to attend Vespers in the Duomo. 6.20pm – Piazza del Popolo – the ladies watch Medieval entertainment.
Sunday May 25th, 9am – Piazza del Popolo – The Corpus Christi historic and religious procession makes its way through the streets of the old town centre.
