Orvieto Transport in town - The Bracci Funicular

First completed in1888 as the easiest access to Orvieto from the east, the Funicolare Bracci was named after Giuseppe Bracci, who financed its building.

The funicular brought passengers directly into the centre of town via a galley dug out of the rock under the Rocca, thereby providing quick access into Orvieto from the railway station.

For almost a century the funicular was powered by a water system, with large water tanks placed underneath each cable car.

Both cable cars would be set in motion simultaneously, one from Piazza Cahen and the other from Piazzale della Stazione, crossing each other half way down.

Closed at the end of the 1970s, the funicular was reopened in June1990 along the original track, after having undergone a complete overhaul of its powering system.
