- The Etrusco-Roman Wine Trail

The Etrusco-Roman Wine Trail
One of the several wine trails that run through Umbria, the Etrusco-Roman Wine Trail runs past Orvieto, Amelia, Terni and into the Valnerina, through a large section of the region that has been used for winegrowing for the past 2500 years.

The wine trail aims to guide visitors to the many wine-growers of the area, as well as include the region’s architectural and artistic wonders. Visitors are therefore advised to start either at Palazzo del Gusto in Orvieto, which houses the Enoteca Regionale and offers a complete panorama of the wines produced in Umbria, or from Palazzo Petrignani in Amelia, which is the seat of the Accademia dell’Alimentazione.

The D.o.c. Wines of Orvieto and Amelia

The wine trail runs along some of the best DOC wine producing areas of Orvieto and Amelia, as well as including what can only be ranked as the finest monuments and artistic sights in the area.

The Strada dei vini etrusco romana runs past the Doc dei Colli Amerini, the Doc di Orvieto, the Doc Rosso Orvietano and the Doc di Corbara.

The Doc di Corbara received its DOC qualification only in 1998 and is now producing some of the most interesting wines in the Orvieto-Baschi area.

The wines produced along the trail include the Rosso, made from 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Nero and Sangiovese grapes blended with 30% Aleatico, Barbera, Cabernet Franc, Lanaiolo, Cisanese, Ciliegiolo Colorino, Dolcetto and Montepulciano. The wine is aged for a minimum 9 months to a maximum 8-9 years and reaches an average alcohol percentage of 12.5°. The Cabernet Sauvignon is made from Cabernet Sauvignon (85/100%), while the Merlot is made from 85/100% Merlot grapes. Lastly, the Pinot Nero is also produced here with 85/100%Pinot nero grapes.
